LOGO PROJECTION.
Logo projection can be achieved in several
different ways, by projecting through a 35mm slide or photographic film,
by projecting through a "gobo" or by projecting via a multimedia projector. All
three methods have their advantages and disadvantages:
Slide Projection enables you to project
literally anything that can be captured on a transparency and so allows complete
pictures to be captured and projected easily. Unfortunately because it is very
easy to burn or bleach the film, the lamp used in these projectors is usually
quite weak and consequently produces rather a dull image which struggles to be
seen in anything but a relatively dark environment.
Gobo
Projection. A "gobo" is simply a thin piece of metal
with a message or logo etched out of it through which the light
can pass. Because there is no film used, the gobo is extremely tough and can be
used with very high output lamps. The disadvantages are that the smaller the
detail on the gobo the less light that can get through the holes and
consequently the duller the image. Also because you are basically creating a
"hole" in a piece of metal, small bridge pieces have to be included in the gobo
design; for example to stop the centre falling out of the letter "O". These
create a "stencil" type image.
Multimedia
Projection or "big screen projection", as it is sometimes called, can
reproduce static and moving images onto any suitable surface. Most commonly used
for "home cinema" entertainment or linked to a computer, the multimedia
projector can reproduce virtually anything from a DVD or VHS recording to a
"Power Point" presentation or satellite television. The disadvantages are the
relatively short life of the lamp, which usually costs several hundred pounds to
replace and the projectors lack of resistance to contamination which reduces the
image quality (The most common contaminant being tobacco smoke).
By far the most common and successful method
is with the use of "gobos". Gobo projectors are relatively
inexpensive, use
lamps with long life and cheap replacement costs and can produce large, bright
images over large areas. Some of these projectors also accept "Glass Gobos"
which are used to produce coloured images without the stencil type bridges.
