SENSORY ROOMS
AUDIO SYSTEM
AUDIO
The audio system is a very important part of any sensory room. The right type of
music or sound can greatly enhance the sensory experience and add a touch of
magic to a lesson.
We never advise the use of domestic “music centres” as they are not designed for
commercial use and, being fully integrated, should a fault develop with say the
CD player or cassette player, the whole unit will have to be removed for repair,
leaving the sensory room with no source of music at all. Also most music centres
have no "microphone" facilities, which prevents them being used for voice
therapy.
EQUIPMENT
All of the audio and lighting controls are installed in a lockable steel cabinet
which, whenever possible, is installed away from the sensory area. In cases
where the main control cabinet has to be installed in the sensory room, it is
possible to fit the cabinet with cushion padding if desired.
The amplifier used will accept inputs from a CD player, cassette player, radio
etc. And includes two microphone inputs that automatically drop the level of the
music whilst a microphone is being used. A remote volume control is installed
in the sensory area to enable the supervisor to alter the music level without
leaving the user or accessing the main control cabinet.
A 6 disc CD player is installed that is capable of playing both normal audio
CD’s and CD’s containing Mp3 files enabling you to create your own sounds on CD
to be played back in the sensory room. A remote control is provided in the
sensory area allowing your supervisor to select any CD or track without leaving
the user.
The loudspeakers
installed are high quality commercial speakers capable of providing sparkling
audio reproduction over long periods of time. Wherever possible four of these
speakers are installed, one in each corner of the room, to provide a "surround
sound" type environment. The importance of the sound quality cannot be over
emphasized, particularly when used for calming and relaxation. The systems that
we install are designed to literally "bathe" the user in quality sound.
A radio microphone can be supplied which allows the user to practice voice
therapy with the reward of hearing their own voice through the sound system. It
is also possible to activate the sensory lighting by making noises into the
microphone, changing the whole colour of the room with each word or noise. Less
expensive microphones, using connecting cables, are also available but
consideration should be given to providing a higher degree of supervision
because of the possibilities of tangling or even strangulation.
