MULTI-SENSORY ROOM PRINCIPLES

What is a Multi-Sensory room?

A Multi Sensory Room is a place where children and adults with special needs can explore and develop their senses and skills. The Multi-Sensory room can have many different features ranging from soft play areas, padded floors and walls and interactive equipment which make dramatic changes to the Multi Sensory room environment using sound, lighting and fragrancing. Premier Solutions have taken the original idea of a sensory environment, that was a pleasant calming place to relax, and expanded the concept to include challenging tasks with dramatic rewards and teaching aids.

Where early Multi-Sensory rooms used simple switches to activate a bubble tube or a spotlight. The new technology available makes it possible to activate whole Multi sensory programs from the touch of one switch.

A user can now select the colour of a bubble tube or bubble screen and change it at will. A simple switch can be used to activate a product, like the “fan can”, that will stimulate multiple senses at the same time, producing coloured light, warm air and moving ribbons simultaneously.

The touch of a switch can activate coloured beams of light that travel around the Multi-Sensory room producing patterns that can be followed by the user. The whole Multi-Sensory room can be made to change colour, simply activated by the users voice. It can even change colour in time with music.

By utilizing a darkened environment the coloured beams and shapes become more vivid and can be used directly onto the partially sighted to encourage the eyes to track the movement of the colours. In larger rooms, tracking light beams can be further enhanced by the use of an optical haze machine (Not a fog or smoke machine.), which produces a fine mist of water molecules that act as projection screens in the air and give the beams of light a 3D effect, making the whole beam visible as a solid object as it passes through the air.

The MultiSensory environment can be further improved to suit your particular clients by the addition of Special needs Furniture, Water Beds, Massage Mattresses, Floor and Wall Padding or Softplay Equipment.

The choices of equipment are large and varied and those pieces recommended for your sensory room would depend upon your individual needs, teaching methods and environment. No two sensory rooms are ever the same as we tailor each one to suit your particular circumstances.
